“As of now, it doesn’t look like Rohit Sharma’s finger will heal enough before the T20Is. In that case, Hardik will lead the side. As far as KL Rahul is concerned, his T20I days seem to be numbered,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI.

IND vs SL Series: What is Rohit’s injury status?

  • The board is not ready to take any risk whatsoever with Rohit’s injury,
  • In previous cases it rushed players like Deepak Chahar, & Jasprit Bumrah, and paid a price.
  • With Australia Test series coming up in February, the board wants to make sure Rohit’s thumb is fully healed.
  • A place in the WTC final spot is at stake, and the India opener’s availability for the Australia series is vital.
  • Rohit is currently feeling some stiffness in his thumb. BCCI medical team has advised Rohit a complete rehab.
  • The duration of it is still not known, but for now, it may take three to four weeks.

India Squad SL Series – There is a possibility that the T20I side to be named will comprise only the specialists of that format. Some players like Virat Kohli might also be given a break from the T20 format.  The selection for the squad of SriLanka series also gains more importance because of the captaincy decision on the horizon. In all likelihood, a new captain for the Indian team also has to be formalized. Hardik Pandya is tipped to take over Rohit Sharma.

“The current selection committee has no say in anything other than recommendation and team selection. Making a change in captaincy is a big call and without a fixed selection committee will be a big blunder. Not all are in favour of Rohit’s removal. He has only been the captain for a year,” another BCCI official close to the development told InsideSport.

Chairman Sharma and Harvinder Singh are in Delhi where a few games are taking place. Meanwhile, Debasis Mohanty had travelled to Kolkata for the Bengal-Himachal game. Sunil Joshi was in Mumbai for the Mumbai-Hyderabad game.

“Chetan and his committee are still watching domestic cricket. They watched the full Vijay Hazare Trophy and also the first two rounds of the Ranji Trophy. Debasish Mohanty was present at Eden Gardens to watch Bengal vs Himachal Pradesh. Basically, they got a two-month extension till December 25,” the official said.

Chetan and his central zone colleague Harvinder Singh have reapplied for the selectors’ posts. The other names in the running include former Indian cricketers Venkatesh Prasad, Nayan Mongia, and Maninder Singh. Atul Wassan, Nikhil Chopra, Amay Khurasiya, Gyanendra Pandey and Mukund Parmar are others to name a few.

According to sources in the BCCI, Prasad is the most accomplished cricketer to apply for the post and is likely to be named as New Chairman soon. The sources further informed that, BCCI is looking for a T20 Specialist as one of the selectors in the NEW COMMITTEE.
