IND vs SL: Chetan Sharma-led panel not keen to include senior players in the T20 team, Vengsarkar believes form and fitness should be given importance in selecting a team
With T20 World Cup taking place in 2024, the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel want a young and dynamic team. For that, the selectors believe it is necessary to identify core players. Rohit and Kohli are 34 plus, the selectors believe with them playing ODI and Test formats, it is necessary to manage their workload, or quit playing one format.
Vengsarkar opines form and fitness should be the main criteria in selecting players and not age. “They are still in great shape physically and mentally (even though both are in their mid-30s). I always believe as a selector that form and fitness are important. Age is no criteria in cricket. Virat Kohli is supremely fit. I still believe they will play in all formats of the game.”

InsideSport already has reported that the BCCI is looking to move on from the duo in wake of the T20 World CUP in 2024. The selectors need to formalize the decision.
“Unfortunately, they won’t be picked or considered for NewZealand series. It’s not about they being dropped or anything, we feel we need to move and prepare the team for the future. Finally, it is selectors who will have to take the decision & speak to the concerned”, confirmed a top BCCI official
