The BCCI in its press release stated that Bumrah requires some more time to build bowling resilience. The All India selection committee has not named any replacement for Jasprit Bumrah.
The plan was for Bumrah to undergo match-simulation workloads at the NCA before making his international comeback, and it is understood that he passed that test in Bengaluru.
However, when he took on similar workloads two days in a row in Mumbai, he felt stiffness in his side. Bumrah is now set to have rest and rehab with the aim being ready to join India’s preparatory camp, which is set to begin on February 1, for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. He will almost certainly miss the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand that begins on January 18.
The Board has decided not to rush him back into action so soon after his rehabilitation. Bumrah has not arrived in Guwahati with the national squad, indicating that he will not play in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The pacer had also undergone rehabilitation and had been declared fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
Surprisingly, the pacer was included in the Indian team on the recommendation of the all-India selection committee.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has included pacer Jasprit Bumrah in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Mastercard 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka,” the BCCI had said on January 3.

But now, as per the reports, Bumrah will not play the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka starting Tuesday. The BCCI sources have said that the call has been taken not to rush him into action so soon.
However, Bumrah is expected to play Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at home. Four match-Test series is important because India needs to win the series with a margin of 3-1 or better to seal their place at WTC. Winning against Australia could possibly be difficult without Bumrah.
There are not many matches left before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. What if BCCI cotton wraps Bumrah till Border-Gavaskar Trophy and on the 1st day of the first match ace bowler gets injured again? It would be worse. So, Bumrah needs a match practice before the important series. Playing against SriLanka and New Zealand could be Bumrah’s opportunity to prove his fitness.
India’s updated squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.
