IND vs SL LIVE: Wasim Jaffer says, ‘It’s time India give Ruturaj Gaikwad a lengthy run’
“Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad should open in this series because India played with Ishan Kishan [against West Indies] and didn’t have a great series. It’s time India gives Ruturaj a lengthy run of three games or two games at least. So, I feel Rohit and Ruturaj should open in at least a couple of games,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.
Ruturaj Gaikwad had opened in the final T20I against West Indies. Unfortunately, he got out for just 4 runs and failed to justify the opportunity. Meanwhile, Team India’s head coach threw his weight behind Gaikwad and Avesh Khan saying players won’t be judged on a single opportunity.
“You can’t specify that you’ll get as many no. of games. Sometimes it’s a combination or injuries. You cannot give a player the same number of games. We like to believe and try and give the players confidence in the group and the squad and we are not going to be judged on one game whether it’s Ruturaj Gaikwad or Avesh Khan. They are here because they performed and deserve to be here. Hopefully, we’ll try to be fair and give enough opportunities we possibly can,” he added.
- Ruturaj Gaikwad made his way into Team India after taking Vijay Hazare Trophy by storm where he slammed 4 centuries.
- He was about to play Ranji Trophy after ODI but a stroke of luck kept him in scheme of things for T20Is as KL Rahul got injured
- Ishan Kishan failed to deliver during the T20Is, managing just 71 runs in three games. Thus, he is likely to be dropped to the No.3 position.
- Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is all set to partner Ruturaj Gaikwad as he declared in the press conference.
