IND vs SL LIVE: Wasim Jaffer says, ‘It’s time India give Ruturaj Gaikwad a lengthy run’

1400 IST:

INDIA vs Sri Lanka Head to Head:

  • India have won 11 of the last 14 completed T20Is between these teams.
  • In India, the stats are even bleaker for Sri Lanka – two wins from ten completed matches, one of which came all the way back in 2009
  • Sri Lanka have lost seven of their ten T20Is since the start of the main draw of last year’s T20 World Cup.

1330 IST: Stats Attack! Rohit Sharma can become highest run-scorer in men’s T20Is

India captain Rohit can go past Virat Kohli and Martin Guptill to become the highest run-getter in T20Is.

  • Rohit Sharma– 3263 runs
  • Virat Kohli– 3296 runs
  • Martin Guptill– 3299 runs

Indian Playing XI 1stT20 – Who opens for India? In all likelihood captain, Rohit Sharma will resume his duties as opener.

As KL Rahul still being unavailable, team is likely to persist with Ruturaj Gaikwad as Rohit’s partner with Ishan Kishan pushed to No. 3.

When asked where you will bat? Wiil it be again in middle order?

Rohit Sharma replied at the pre-match press conference.  “It was just for that match. I wanted to give them a longer run. We can’t think of World Cup as it is still far away. We do things depending on what we require in the present,”

Another big choice India will have to make is – who to bring in place of SKY? The team can either blood in Sanju Samson or may go with all-round skills of Deepak Hooda.

IND vs SL LIVE Score – Jadeja in XI, who goes out? Jadeja last played a T20 game against Namibia during the disastrous T20 World Cup. Since than lot has changed in Indian cricket.

Few new faces like Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur have established themselves as allrounder & few others like Hardik Pandya is completely out of scene.

Now with Jadeja coming back – Rohit Sharma will have to take some tough calls.

  • Will he take place of Venkatesh Iyer? The young KKR batsman is performing well & Indian think tank is unlikely to disturb his progress. Morever with SKY out, Venkatesh Iyer place in XI is completely secured.
  • Will it be Harshal Patel? Harshal again has done well for himself and team. Rohit Sharma again would not like to tinker with him
  • Jadeja for Ravi Bishnoi? In all likelihood young Bishnoi will have to make way for Jadeja. Team management is likely to bring in Yuzvendra Chahal in Indian XI. In that case Jadeja will be team’s prefer choice over Bishnoi.

IND vs SL LIVE: Rohit Sharma declares, ‘Enough of experimentation, I am coming back as opener’ – Follow Live Updates

Rohit Sharma Press Conference excerpts:

Captain of all formats:

It’s a great honour. But I have a lot of challenges to look forward to. We have a great bunch and looking forward to the matches.

Bumrah as a vice-captain

It doesn’t matter whether it is a bowler or a batter. It is the mind that matters. Bumrah has a great mind. It’s a great for him to step into the leadership role.

Sanju Samson’s return

That guy has got talent. Whenever we have seen him bat, everyone gets over the moon. A lot of people have skillset. But it is up to him to utilise. We see a lot of match-winning abilities in him. I hope he understands that. He is definitely in our plans. His backfoot play is brilliant and when we go to Australia, it will be of great use.

Managing workload, grooming a vice-captain

I am very clear in mind how I want to take it forward. We have seen a lot of injuries in the squad. We are trying to manage and put a roadmap how I want to take it forward.

I won’t have that much of a role in telling them everything. They are mature cricketers. I will keep advising them. We have been groomed by someone else. And that’s how the process is. KL, Bumrah and Pant have big role in India’s success and they know the responsibilities on their shoulder.

Ranji Trophy performances

All I can tell them is to keep scoring runs and the opportunity will arise. I know a lot of these guys. Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma all have got their opportunities because they scored a lot of runs. They will have to just wait for their chance and keep scoring.

A lot of things depend on the pitch, combinations etc. So, you never know who is required.

Suryakumar’s injury

It’s a big setback as he was in fine form. But we have players in his place. He was standing in the slips and got hit on the thumb. But it is an opportunity for others.

Experimentation with batting position

It was just for that match. I wanted to give them a longer run. We can’t think of World Cup as it is still far away. We do things depending on what we require in the present.

Comeback from injury

I don’t want any player to get injured. I have been through a lot of injuries and I know how difficult it is. You have to start from zero. We will rotate the squad to keep the players fresh. It will also help us see the new guys.
