IND vs SL Live: Shubman Gill Guwahati ODI – Ishan Kishan’s wait to make Team India’s playing XI appears to be getting longer. Opener Shubman Gill slammed a well crafted half-century against Sri Lanka in the first ODI. Gill’s half-century meant more bad news for Ishan Kishan, who is likely to be warming the benches for the second ODI as well. Shubman opened with skipper Rohit Sharma for the first time, and the openers put on a 143-run stand for the opening wicket.

Gill was eventually out for 70 off 60 balls, trapped by Dasun Shanaka in front of the wicket. Ishan, after scoring a double hundred in the previous match against Bangladesh, would have hoped for a spot in the playing XI. He is, however, on the bench, with Gill getting the start.  Follow India vs SriLanka LIVE updates with Insidesport.IN & IND SL LIVE Streaming with Disney+ Hotstar.

Shubman Gill presents strong case for openers slot

Giving Gill the long rope did not prove disastrous as he continued his purple patch with the bat with yet another half century. Ahead of the IND vs SL 1st ODI, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma had made it clear that the management had decided to give Shubman Gill the nod over Ishan Kishan for the opening ODI. However he also praised Kishan and said that he is still in the scheme of things.

The Team India skipper  said, “I am not going to take anything from Ishan. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double hundred and I know what it takes to get a double hundred, it is a great achievement. But just to be honest and be fair to the guys who have done really well before that we need to give those guys enough chances as well.”

Before this match Gill had scored 617 runs in 14 matches which included a century and four half-centuries. Ishan Kishan on the other hand have played just 10 matches and scored 477 runs. The left hander’s fearless approach could have been a game changer for the team but the management decided to go with Gill.

IND vs SL 1st ODI: Team India on top against Sri Lanka

After winning the toss Sri Lanka asked India to bat first. The decision back fired with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill went after the Lankan bowlers. The Team India skipper played attacking shots, while Gill also scored at brisk pace apart from anchoring the innings.

The duo not only completed their respective half centuries but also put up 143 run stand for the opening wicket. The partnership was broken by Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka who trapped Gill in front of wicket. After Gill’s wicket Rohit Sharma looked to be breezing towards yet another century. However his innings was ended at 83 Dilshan Madushanka after he chopped the pacers delivery onto the stumps.
