Speaking on a pre-match show, Gambhir said, “The surprising fact is that in the last four or five years he has gotten this many hundreds. Rohit Sharma before the last five-six years was not this consistent. He definitely got about 20 hundreds in the last five-six-seven years.”

Gambhir’s sudden comparison of Rohit with Ponting took his fellow panelist Sanjay Manjrekar by surprise.  “You missed that,” Manjrekar said to attract the host’s attention. However, Gambhir was still adamant on his point.  “No, he is a better player than Ricky Ponting. because Ricky has got a sh** record in the subcontinent,” Gambhir added.

Taking a look at the performances of both Ponting and Rohit in the subcontinent, the Indian skipper has an even spread of centuries. Outside the subcontinent, the right-handed batter has stroked 13 ODI centuries and he averages 47. On the other hand for Ponting, average-wise there is not much of a difference. The World Cup winning skipper averages 41 in ODIs played in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. However, Ponting failed to convert his starts to big scores in the Asian countries. The veteran batter only has six ODI centuries in the subcontinent out of his total 30 hundreds.
