Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. India captain Dhawan revealed that wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan, who is also celebrating his birthday on Sunday, is making his ODI debut along with his Mumbai Indians teammate Suryakumar Yadav. Sanju Samson was once again ignored by the team mangement.

Rahul Dravid on Debutants
The official Twitter handle of BCCI shared a video in which Dravid can be seen welcoming Suryakumar and Ishan in the ODI setup. “It’s obviously a great achievement, it’s lovely to welcome two people into the family. It is a result of a lot of hard work, it is a really proud moment for them but also for their family. Double celebration for Ishan Kishan today as it is his birthday,” said Dravid while addressing the team huddle before the start of the first ODI.
Debut on Birthday for Ishan Kishan
Ishan Kishan made his international debut earlier this year against England in the T20 format. In his debut match opening the batting for Team India scored 56 runs and impressed everyone with his stroke-making. Ishan Kishan came in limelight in IPL 2020, where he played a vital role in Mumbai Indians winning the trophy. The southpaw scored 516 runs at an extraordinary average of 57.33.
Suryakumar Yadav to bat at number 3
Kishan’s Mumbai Indian’s teammate Suryakumar Yadav will also be making his ODI debut for Team India. He had a stellar season where he scored 480. In IPL 2021 he gathered 173 runs in seven games. In the India vs England 2021 series, he received his maiden T20I cap. The right-hand batsman scored 89 runs in three games.
Sanju Samson injured
India batsman Sanju Samson was ruled out of the first ODI against Sri Lanka on Sunday due to a sprain in the ligament of his knee. “Sanju Samson sprained a ligament in his knee and was hence not available for selection for this game. The medical team is tracking his progress at the moment,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.

Speaking in the virtual press conference Dhawan said,” These ODI matches are very important to us. This is a very young said and we will love to build it. All the players should get the opportunity to represent their country and show their talent and skills.”
