IND vs SL: Lucknow Super Giants mentor Gautam Gambhir has said that LSG skipper KL Rahul will have to wait for his chances for the Indian team. The former Indian cricketer also said that Ishan Kishan is the ideal opening partner for Rohit Sharma in the 50-over format. To note, Kishan recently stroked an excellent double-hundred in an ODI game against Bangladesh in testing conditions.  Follow Indian Cricket Team LIVE & India vs SriLanka LIVE updates with InsideSport.IN

In his most recent ODI game, which took place in Bangladesh earlier this month, Kishan improved upon his first ODI century by scoring a career-high 210. Since Shikhar Dhawan is no longer in the ODI squad, Gambhir thinks that Kishan should continue to play.

“I’m amazed we’re discussing this, because someone’s got a double-hundred in the previous innings,” Gambhir said when asked who he would like to see as Rohit’s opening partner. “The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack – especially at [their] home – should play.

What was his score by the 35th over? You have no one else to look at besides Ishan Kishan. He needs more time to prove himself. So, not only can he bat, but he can also keep wickets.  Even if someone else had scored a perfect 200, I doubt we would have been as enthusiastic about them as we are about Ishan Kishan. It’s because we keep bringing up the same supporting cast. For me, the debate is over,” added Gambhir.

KL Rahul will probably be a back-up wicketkeeper: Gambhir

KL Rahul has not been in his best form lately. Leading the Indian side in a Test series against Bangladesh, Rahul failed to get going in both games. His white-ball form has not been upto the mark. Gambhir said that Rahul will have to wait for his chances now. The World Cup winning player also backed Suryakumar Yadav to fill in the number 4 spot in ODIs.

  • In 2022, KL Rahul has played 9 ODI innings, but his numbers are not upto the mark.
  • The right-handed batter has managed to amass just 251 runs at an average of 27.88.
  • He played at a strike rate of 80.19 with two fifties to his name.
  • Rahul did not score any ODI century this year with 73 being his highest score.
Probably he’ll be a back-up wicketkeeper and a back-up batter,” Gambhir said on Rahul. “See, if you haven’t been able to grab the opportunity and someone else has, you have to wait for your turn. I don’t think you can look beyond Surya at No. 4. “Yes, he hasn’t got the same numbers what he has in T20Is, but we all know how destructive he can be; especially when you have five fielders inside the ring, he can win you games,” Gambhir added
