India Cricket Team and the vice-captaincy conundrum continues again and again. Be it KL Rahul, or Ajinkya Rahane match or now Jasprit Bumrah, BCCI’s vice-captaincy merry-go-round continues. For the upcoming IND vs SA Test series, it will be ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah who will serve as Rohit Sharma’s deputy.
It is quite uncertain as to how the BCCI decides to choose their vice captain. Back in February when the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was held, KL Rahul served as the vice-captain of the squad. He was then dropped as the vice captain before being dropped from the team for the 3rd and 4th match respectively.
On the other hand, pundits and fans were left baffled when Ajinkya Rahane was made the deputy for the all important WTC Finals. Following India’s humiliating loss, Rahane continued to serve the deputy for the next 2 Test matches back in July and August when India toured West Indies for 2 Test matches.
Falling to score runs, Rahane was failed to find his place back in the team. And now the BCCI has gone on to name a new vice captain to Rohit Sharma. This time it is Jasprit Bumrah. Interestingly, the BCCI didn’t name Bumrah as the vice captain of the Men in Blue when then vice captain Hardik Pandya got injured.
Interestingly in the ODI World Cup, it was KL Rahul who was appointed as the vice captain in the absence of Pandya. Now KL lead the side and won India the IND vs SA ODI series, but when it comes to red ball cricket, a new vice-captain is in place.
Who knows, should Bumrah perform poorly in the upcoming 2 match series, the BCCI might go on to name a new vice-captain to Rohit Sharma for the IND vs ENG 5 match Test series?
