Ahead of the 3rd ODI against South Africa, he shed some light on how he has been practising different types of roles. While he has his No 5 spot fixed for now, that won’t be the case when KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav walk in. He has to be ready for different positions considering he is in contention for a spot with Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan.
“I have been practising different types of roles in the last couple of years. I have put in time to understand the types of roles in different teams. I have been given instructions to be ready and do this in the last one year,” Sanju Samson told Star Sports before the 3rd ODI.

The talented batter has been absolutely superb in the ongoing three-match series against South Africa. While Samson scored an unbeaten 86 from 63 balls in the first one-dayer, he then backed it up with an unbeaten 36-ball 30 in the second game. With that, he has done what he could to keep his place in the team.
But now, the ball will be in selectors’ court to reward him. With the ODI World Cup coming up next year, selectors have been auditioning for different spots. Both Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson have done well as wicketkeeper batters.

As far as his ODI career is concerned, the 27-year-old has scored 292 runs in 10 games at an average and strike rate of 73.00 and 106.96 respectively. It is to be noted that he isn’t a part of India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. However, his recent form might force the selectors to give him a longer run in the shorter formats of the game.
As for the ongoing 50-over game against South Africa, India managed to bundle the visitors for just 99. Kuldeep Yadav picked four wickets. As both sides have won a game each, the winner of this match will go on to win the series. With the hosts needing just 100 runs to win the game, it is highly unlikely that Samson would get too many balls to make an impression once again.
