IND vs SA ODI – Washington Sundar India SQUAD SA Series: Washington Sundar has replaced Deepak Chahar for the remainder of the ongoing India vs South Africa ODI series. The off-spinner is also making a comeback into the Indian team after an injury lay off as well. The pacer was ruled out for the Indian team due to back problems. But the inclusion of Sundar has raised eyebrows. It means the team has been overloaded with spinners for the remainder of the series. Also, it was a good opportunity to give Mohammad Shami some game time fore T20 W0rld Cup as well.

IND vs SA ODI series: Eyebrows raised as selectors make another dubious call, Washington Sundar replaces Deepak Chahar ahead of T20 WC

Deepak Chahar is said to have reported to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. However, that is the norm after player picks up niggles and injuries. Chahar faced stiffness problems in his back after the third T20I against South Africa. Despite being in the ODI team, he missed the the first ODI in Lucknow.

Chahar is one of the reserves for T20 World Cup. There are not details about his injury, but if it is a serious one, he might not even fly to Australia next week.

The inclusion of Washington over Shami raises more concern. The latter is looked upon as a primary replacement for Jasprit Bumrah, who is ruled out of the competition. Why did the selectors not give Shami some game time? Is he still unfit?

Shami missed the India vs Australia series after being named in the squad. He was infected with Covid-19, which ruled him out. Despite having attained recovery, Shami was not named for the South Africa ODI series. Even when the selectors got another chance to include him, they added Washington.

Adding Washington means, they have loaded the Indian team for the series with spinners. Besides the off-spinner, India already have Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi and Shahbaz Ahmed among others. At best, India will only pbe fielding two of them. It remains to be seen if the players will be picked for either of the second or third ODI

Updated India squad:  Shikhar Dhawan (C), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Shahbaz Ahmed, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar.
