Head coach Rahul Dravid isn’t happy with that and said he will have conversations with Pant on shot selection and the timing of it.
“In the sense that, we know Rishabh is a positive player and he plays in a particular manner which has gotten him success. But yeah, of course, there are times, we will have a level of conversations with him around, it is just about the timing of that shot you know. No one is going to tell Rishabh not to be a positive or aggressive player. Sometimes it is about choosing the timing to do that,” Rahul Dravid said at a virtual press conference after 2nd Test.
Wasim Jaffer feels Rishabh Pant needs to respect the conditions and the bowlers. The latter needs to spend enough time on crease before showcasing his natural game.
“Once you spend 30-40 minutes then you can go back to your normal game. But until then because he’s batting at No.6 – a crucial position. If the team management is putting so much faith in you then you need to deliver more often. You need to play with the tail, something which VVS Laxman used to do brilliantly. He needs to improve the game against seam and swing where he often himself in trouble. He is not a newcomer and needs to fight it out for some time,” Wasim Jaffer told InsideSport.IN
Sunil Gavaskar also seemed agitated at the shot selection. “That is not the way to play and I am pretty certain that in the change room, Rahul Dravid would have given him [Rishabh Pant] a hearing, or as they say in cricket, Dravid must have given him a ‘bamboo’,” he said.
- Rishabh Pant is in the squad for his batting more than his keeping skills but it seems like the runs have stopped coming from his willow.
- His scorecard in the series reads 8, 34, 17 & 0. Another failure could hurt India’s dream of securing a maiden Test series in South Africa.
- He was the main force behind India’s success in Australia but South Africa conditions require players to access the conditions and adapt the wait and watch approach.
- Wriddhiman Saha is waiting back in the wings after his timely half-century against New Zealand in Kanpur Test that prevented KS Bharat’s debut
- Pant’s aggressive nature has done no good with the upcoming final test and Dravid & Kohli needs to come up with a strong decision.
