Indian bowlers barring Shardul Thakur had a match to forget as they struggled to get amongst the wickets in the IND vs SA 2nd Test. While Shardul struck with seven wickets to ease the burden in the 1st innings, the Indian attack looked toothless and was comfortably dealt with by the South Africans, with Dean Elgar leading the way with a stellar 96.
India needed to bowl the Proteas out and defend 240, but managed a total of three wickets, with only one on Day 4 as Elgar, Rassie van der Dussen and later Temba Bavuma finished off the game with ease. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up a solitary wicket each despite sending down 38 and 21.4 overs respectively, in a dull day for India’s senior pros.
Mohammed Siraj finished wicketless as he struggled with a hamstring injury, while Mohammed Shami finished with match figures of 3/107, bowling 38 overs. The Indian pacers failed to create any pressure, with Bumrah conceding over 4 an over in the second innings, while Siraj was hit for more than 6 an over. Thakur followed his 7/61 with figures of 1/47, but couldn’t help his side break the resolve of the South Africans.

Incidentally, the run-chase marks South Africa’s first win at the Wanderers against India. In five previous attempts, India had eeked out three draws and two wins, with each coming in 2006 and 2018 under the leadership of Raul Dravid and Virat Kohli. This is also South Africa’s highest run-chase at Johannesburg, overtaking their 217-run chase against New Zealand.
