India Playing XI 1st ODI: Venkatesh Iyer makes ODI debut, Ruturaj Gaikwad to wait for his chance

India Playing XI: KL Rahul(c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant(w), Venkatesh Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal

  • R Ashwin has so far played 111 ODIs and taken 150 wickets at a brilliant economy rate of 4.92
  • He will look to play a key role with Yuzvendra Chahal during the entire series.

NOTE: Earlier, Chahal & Kuldeep Yadav had shared 33 wickets during India’s previous ODI series in South Africa in 2018. India had won the series 5-1 under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

  • Ashwin will look to make the most of the opportunity and also contribute with the bat in absence of R Jadeja.
  • He needs to turn it around in the ODIs after managing just 3 wickets in 3 Tests. His performance could decide his fate in the upcoming IPL 2022 mega auction.
  • He is in the squad in absence of R Jadeja & Axar Patel and needs to do things rights if he wants to stay part of Team India in the white-ball format.
  • He has come a long time ahead as MS Dhoni was the captain during his last ODI stint with team India. He has last featured against West Indies on June 30, 2017.
  • He is playing under different captains in white-ball matches after return: T20s under Virat Kohli & now ODIs under KL Rahul.
