Shami was five wickets away from reaching the 200-Test wicket landmark ahead of the Boxing Day Test which is underway at Centurion. The 31-year-old dismissed Keegan Petersen, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma, and Kagiso Rabada to complete the fifer.

Shami is only the fifth Indian pacer to reach the 200 Test wickets milestone after legendary Kapil Dev, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, and Javagal Srinath.

The 31-year-old took to the micro-blogging website to cherish the special moment.

“A proud moment and to do it for the team here in Centurion is special 200 and counting. Thanks to everyone for the love and support,” Shami tweeted.

Former greats VVS Laxman and former India head coach Ravi Shastri took to their respective social media handles to congratulate Shami on the special achievement.

New NCA head and former India batsman VVS Laxman congratulated Shami on his achievement.

“After a fabulous innings from Rahul on Day 1, an outstanding display of seam bowling from Shami. 5 wkts and a great way to get to 200 Test Wickets. With his fine spell,India take a commanding 130 run lead. Wishing for the batsman to capitalise & set a big target for South Africa,” Laxman said.

Mohammad Kaif also took to his Twitter account to congratulate Shami saying he is the world’s most underrated pacer but has the same quality as Jasprit Bumrah, James Anderson and Pat Cummins.

Meanwhile, India took a crucial 130-run lead after bowling out South Africa for 197 in the first innings. Mohammad Shami was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with 5 for 44 runs in 16 overs. For the hosts, Temba Bavuma was the top scorer with 52 off 103 balls.

On day 3 Stumps, India’s score read 16/1 with 146 runs lead and KL Rahul and nightwatchman Shardul Thakur unbeaten at the crease.
