KL Rahul embraced the responsibility of being vice-captain in some style scoring a fine century in a measured innings on Day 1 of the IND vs SA 1st Test. Facing the new ball on a green pitch in overcast conditions, Rahul masterfully played out the threat of Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi as he bid his time in the crease before getting amongst the runs.

While Mayank Agarwal continued to be the aggressor, Rahul took a more sedate approach and brought up his half-century in the second session of the match. It continued the Indian opener’s brilliant return to form in the longest format of the game after he had starred in England earlier this year. Rahul then made went on to convert his start into a fine century, his second of 2021 and his first against South Africa. The Indian vice-captain showed great patience as he batted out 217 deliveries to get to the three-figure mark.

This is KL Rahul’s seventh Test century, with six of those coming away from home. Rahul now has hundreds in England, Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and now South Africa. The Indian vice-captain’s hundred is the second by an Indian opener in South Africa, after Wasim Jaffer’s effort in the 2006 series.
While Mayank Agarwal and Chesteshwar Pujara perished soon into the 2nd session, Rahul kept his cool and remained unbeaten at Tea, batting alongside skipper Virat Kohli. Mayank and Rahul’s 117-run partnership at the top of the order was only India’s third 100 partnership in South Africa and the first after more than a decade. Earlier, Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik had put on 153 in 2006, while Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir combined for 137 in 2010.
