The first catch was dropped by Gill at first slip. The batter being Janneman Malan, whose outside edge of the bat was found by Shardul Thakur. Despite the ball carrying comfortably at slip, Gill failed to latch onto it. Malan was on 17 then, and added just five runs before he was out for 22.

At the end, when Henrich Klassen and David Miller was going after the bowlers, the latter was dropped on 51 by Gaikwad. Though the catch was not easy, the player should have caught it after getting to the ball. Ravi Bishnoi also dropped a catch with Miller on 52. He failed to judge a skier despite running to get there. The in form South African added 24 runs as he remained not out on 75.

As for Siraj drop, Klassen hit the ball straight up in the air. The ball sailed into the night sky, but Siraj failed to be under control and failed to catch the ball. The pacer had covered the ground well, but did not look too comfortable on the ball. Klassen was on 64 and he remained not out on 74.

India are playing a different team in the ongoing ODI series when compared to the T20 squad against South Africa. However, there remains a common factor – poor fielding standards.

Even former India coach Ravi Shastri criticised the Indian players for their fielding in the India vs Australia T20 series last month. Though India’s fielding standards have improved from the last decade, the Men in Blue need to be consistent.  They cannot afford to drop easy catches in matches. Sometimes, that could prove to be a difference between a win and a loss as well.
