Bavuma suffered an injury on his left hamstring while attempting to chase down a shot from Virat Kohli. The incident took place during India’s 20th over in the first innings of IND vs SA 1st Test. After the injury, Bavuma was unable to come out to bat in South Africa’s first innings. He was criticised by cricket enthusiasts and former cricketers for not providing Marco Jansen with an opportunity to score a his maiden century by coming out to bat at number 11. Without Bavuma being able to bat, South Africa had to declare their innings at 408/9.
The South Africa cricket team in a statement said that their assessments deemed Bavuma coming out to bat in the first innings ‘too risky’. The statement further said that the Proteas medical team are pulling all stops possible to enable Bavuma to bat in the 4th innings ‘should he be required’.
“Following continuous medical assessments, it was determined that there was too much of a risk of aggravating his left hamstring injury had he gone out to bat at this stage of the game. The medical team are managing him to give him the best chance to bat should he be required in the 4th innings,” South Africa’s statement read.
