Appearing on the “Nadir Ali podcast” YouTube channel, Kamran was prompted to share any amusing incidents in which he successfully sledged a batter. While he was unable to recall such an event, he related a story from the 2005 India-Pakistan Test match at Mohali, where Malik and Ganguly had engaged in some light-hearted banter while the India captain was on strike. Ganguly was out in the next ball as a result of Malik’s brilliant psychological manoeuvre.
Kamran recalled that Ganguly had scored a boundary off one of Danish Kaneria’s errant deliveries. The India captain must be under pressure for only hitting that pitch for a four rather than a six, said Malik, who was positioned at mid on. The wicketkeeper Kamran was the target of his remarks, but he really meant to upset Ganguly. The batter became enraged at Malik’s mind tricks after being struck out on the following ball.
“In 2005 Mohali Test match, Danish (Kaneria) bowled and Shoaib Malik was at silly mid-on and Salman (Butt) was at silly mid-off. Danish missed the length. Sourav Ganguly was at strike and scored a boundary. Shoaib Malik said, ‘Dekha Kamran, kitna pressure hain Dada pe, chakke wala bowl chauka mara. (Did you see Kamran? Seems like Dada is under pressure. That ball should have been hit for a six instead of four)’ Ganguly stepped out of the crease to hit the next ball and he was stummped out. Before leaving he told Malik, ‘Tu bohut tez hai, tujhe me chhodunga nahi, tu bahar aa‘,” he said.
After the first Test at Mohali finished in a draw, the series was level 1-1. India achieved a notable victory in Kolkata, but Pakistan fought back hard in the third Test to tie the series. In the series, Ganguly was experiencing a slump in performance. At an average of 9.6, he scored 48 runs over five innings. The left-hander was dismissed twice in the series by the leg-spinner Kaneria.
