IND vs NZ: Shubman Gill relishes his 90 in Mumbai, calls it “one of his best” Test knocks

With New Zealand effectively at 143/9, India would love to close out the third innings as quickly as possible.

Going into the third Test at the Wankhede Stadium, the Indian batters were heavily criticised for their batting against spin bowling. Shubman Gill was also amongst those batters, who played with hard hands and was getting beaten all ends up as well. But oh boy, Gill played a delightful knock on what was another spinning track in Mumbai. Batting alongside Rishabh Pant, Gill stitched a 96-run stand, which was absolutely crucial for India after their awful last ten minutes on Day 1.

90 by Shubman Gill is nothing less than a 100

India were 84/4 on a track that asked for application and top class technique. Gill, similarly, dished out a masterful batting, hitting every loose ball and respecting dangerous deliveries with his watertight technique. He kept his bat in front of his pads, something which he missed to do in Pune. With the help of seven fours and a solitary six, Gill put on a show that meant a world of good for India.

Following the day’s play, Gill attended a press conference, addressing media. When asked where does he rate this 90-run knock in his career so far, Gill said, “Yes, definitely it’s one of my better knocks that I have played in Test cricket. And leading up to this test match, it was all about me working on the areas that I worked before the England series that we played.”

Ever since replacing Cheteshwar Pujara at the number three slot, Gill has constantly been under pressure to deliver. He was even failing to converting his starts regularly, and didn’t score a fifty in his last five innings.

I think I have been having a great year. I played the last Test, I got two starts, I was not able to convert, that is a different thing. But I was very confident going into this innings, I had no pressure on me,” Gill continued
