IND vs NZ LIVE: Sunil Gavaskar is not sweating on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s absence from T20Is. India legend has backed the new selection committee led by Chetan Sharma on dropping the star duo from the T20Is. Gavaskar stated that selectors ‘want to give more opportunities to younger players’. For Rohit, Kohli, and several other veterans, it is obvious what needs to be done. The BCCI has obviously moved past the two and with individuals like Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R. Ashwin, and Dinesh Karthik.

KL Rahul was also not given any consideration by the selectors for the ODI or T20 squads. The BCCI, however, has cited family obligations as the reason for his and Axar Patel’s omission from the ODI and T20I selections against New Zealand.

Sunil Gavaskar however said that the batters have been rested in preparation for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He also discussed the plans of the new selection committee and Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s role in the 50-over World Cup.

“The way I see it is that, the next T20 World Cup is in 2024, next year, and the new selection committee that has come, wants to give more opportunities to the younger players. That doesn’t mean that Kohli and Rohit won’t be considered anymore. And if they have an impressive form throughout 2023 then they have to be in the team. The other factor is with the Australia series starting, the selectors might have wanted to rest them for the big contest so that they can make a fresh start against the Aussies and that will benefit India,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Hardik Pandya will continue to lead the T20I squad. The new selection committee also picked Prithvi Shaw, who last played for India in July 2021, in the T20I squad.
