“I got a call from him saying his father was being too strict with him and that he needed to be taken away. That’s when I called Rahul (Dravid) and told him that it was time for him to join the national team,” Ganguly spoke at a book-signing ceremony on the concluding day of the 40th Sharjah International Book Fair on Saturday.
“We grew up together, started around the same time, and spent most of the time playing together. So, it was easy for some of us to make him feel welcome and wanted,” he added.

- Dravid has now joined as full-time head coach for Team India and his job kick starts on November 17 with India vs New Zealand T20I series.
- He has signed his contract till 2023 and will draw a salary of Rs 10 crore + Bonuses. (More than Ravi Shastri Rs 5.5 cr+ bonuses)
- He had earlier donned the coaching hat during the India tour of Sri Lanka guiding second-string Men in Blue to an ODI series win as Virat Kohli & Co were busy touring England.
