IND vs NZ Live: Shreyas Iyer becomes third consecutive Mumbaikar to score hundred on Test debut – Shreyas Iyer etched his name in the record books after scoring a century on Test debut during the IND vs NZ 1st Test in Kanpur. Iyer became the 16th Indian to score a test century on debut as he helped India go past the 300 mark despite the best efforts of Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee to thwart those plans. In the process, the 26-year-old became the latest Mumbaikar to score a hundred on debut, following the efforts of Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw. Mumbai’s impact on Indian cricket is well known and Shreyas Iyer is the latest in line of stars to make it big with the Indian team. He became just the third Mumbaikar to score a century on debut, following Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw.

Shreyas Iyer’s century comes at a time when India are looking to bolster their middle order and the 26-year-old has thrown his hat in the ring letting his bat do the talking. During the IND vs NZ 1st Test, India were in a precarious position at 145/4, but Iyer stitched a valuable partnership with Jadeja in the middle.

After batting at a strike rate of 30 between Lunch and Tea, Iyer upped the scoring rate against the spinners. He ended Day 1 unbeaten on 75, before adding 30 more runs on Day 2. Iyer’s innings received lofty praise from the commentators including former Indian captain and Mumbai star Sunil Gavaskar. Incidentally, it was Gavaskar who handed Iyer his debut cap on Thursday before Day 1’s play.

Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals teammate Prithvi Shaw was the last Indian to score a century on debut. The opener had slammed a stunning 134 against West Indies in 2018 and remains around the fringes of the team. Rohit Sharma remains the other after he scored a stellar 177, which also came against the West Indies, in what was Sachin Tendulkar’s penultimate Test.

Sharma’s 177 remains the second-highest score by an Indian on debut after Shikhar Dhawan and he remains one of the few to have scored hundreds in their first two Tests. Rohit Sharma has now switched to the top of the order and is one of India’s major mainstays, but opted for rest from the current New Zealand series to manage his workload.
