Coming back to the match, India stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first. The host were off to a tidy in the first six overs before Kyle Jamieson drew the first blood by removing Mayank Agarwal cheaply at 13.

Shubhman Gill and Cheteswar Pujara then added fifty runs partnership for the second wicket as Gill slammed his fourth Test fifty.
