Jadeja continued his prolific form at home in the Test format and carried his bat along with Shreyas Iyer – who made his debut in Test cricket today. The left-handed batsman slammed six fours in his unbeaten 50 runs knock and steadied India’s innings which was reeling at 145/4 after Pujara and Rahane couldn’t convert the start.

Coming back to the match, India stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first. The host were off to a tidy in the first six overs before Kyle Jamieson drew the first blood by removing Mayank Agarwal cheaply at 13.
Shubhman Gill and Cheteswar Pujara then added fifty runs partnership for the second wicket as Gill slammed his fourth Test fifty. However, Jamieson once again helped Kiwis bounce back in the game as he removed Shubhman Gill just after the lunch break. Pujara and Rahane too departed cheaply scoring 26 and 35 respectively as India’s score read 145/4 at one moment.
However, Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Shreyas Iyer then slammed half-centuries and stitched a solid partnership of 113 to control the proceedings, helping India post 258/4 before bad light stopped play on Day 1.
