IND vs NZ Live: Kapil Dev questions proposed rotation policy in Team India – Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has criticised plans for a rotation policy with the Indian cricket team. With some serious depth in their ranks, the Men in Blue could afford to rest some of their regular stars and keep them fresh in what is a jammed calendar due to bio-bubble environments in the post-Covid-19 era. Both captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli along with new head coach Rahul Dravid have stressed on rest and recuperation of players, but Dev questions the approach for the Indian team.

Former Indian captain and legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev has made his reservations known of the much-debated rotation policy set to be adopted by the Indian team under Rahul Dravid. With added workload in already packed schedules, the team management are eying top rotate players and give opportunities to players in their large talent pool, a move which Kapil Dev believes will only lead to confusion and chaos.

Speaking on Uncut, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain said, “I am not too sure about it (rotating Indian players). I guess the people within the BCCI can take a call on it. I should not be a single person’s thought process. A group of players and BCCI officials should sit and figure out the amount of cricket that needs to be played. If you rotate players, it can land you in tricky positions.”

India have previously adopted rotation under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, with the skipper opting to rotate Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir during the ill-fated CB series in 2012.

The move was very unpopular back then, and Kapil Dev predicts a similar response this time around should captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli proceed with it. However, the former captain opined that the decision should be made in consultation with the players and if they believe it is the right way forward, then a lot of potential issues could be nipped in the bud.

Kapil Dev said, “What if it is a final and you are forced to drop both Rohit and Kohli? There is going to be endless criticism. That is why this rotation policy is beyond me. Like I said, group of players should get together and if they believe it is the right way forward, then why not?”

With back to back series planned for 2022 and 2023 which will also include the T20 and 50-over World Cup, the BCCI is taking the bio-bubble fatigue seriously. A BCCI official had earlier told Insidesport, “We must take into account the fatigue of players. Staying in consecutive bio-bubble is not easy and there will be a need to rotate squad. The New Zealand series will be a start and with the talent we have in the domestic circuit, a lot more players will get a chance at least in T20s while we have a core group for Test.”
