While Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were the architects with twin centuries, Mohammad Shami bagged a 7-wicket haul to apply the finishing touch. Batting first, India posted a record 397/4 in 50 overs with Kohli surpassing Sachin Tendulkar with a World Record 50th ODI ton. Iyer smashed 105. Shami bagged 7 wickets for 57 runs after Daryl Mitchell hammered 134. India bowled out NZ for 327. This is India’s longest winning streak in a World Cup as they have won 10 matches in a row.
India Innings Summary:
Win the toss, win the match. It has been the case in Mumbai for the most part. But this wicket had hardly anything for the bowlers. And Rohit Sharma & Shubman Gill provided the best possible start. Rohit was the star again, taking on the likes of Trent Boult and Tim Southee. While he perished for 29-ball 47, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli took complete control.
Gill had to retire hurt for 71 with cramps, adding 93 runs with Virat Kohli. But it did not dampen India’s spirits. As Shreyas Iyer kept ticking the scorecard going, Virat Kohli took control in front of Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards and David Beckham apart from his wife Anushka Sharma as he embarked on a World Record 50th ODI ton.
With Shreyas Iyer, Kohli added 163 runs off 128 balls. While Kohli did struggle with cramps and Shreyas Iyer was fluent with his efforts, all eyes were on Kohli’s half-century of century.
Ultimately, the moment arrived as Virat Kohli rewrote history and made impossible possible, hitting 50th ODI ton. While Kohli perished soon for 117, there was no let-off from Shreyas Iyer.
Iyer hammered his second consecutive century, scoring 70-ball 105. KL Rahul also applied the finishing touch with 20-ball 39 as India posted a mammoth 397/4 total.
New Zealand Innings Summary
Kiwis needed a great start in a record chase of 398. But Mohammad Shami had other ideas. He struck in the 6th over to dismiss Devon Conway (13) and then returned again in 8th over to remove in-form Rachin Ravindra (13) to rattle New Zealand.
From 39/2, Daryl Mitchell & Kane Williamson put the pressure back on India. While Mitchell was at his fluent best, Williamson anchored from the other end to add 181 runs off 149 balls. Just when India looked under pressure with runs coming in fluently, Shami returned to strike again, twice.
First, he dismissed Williamson for 69 and then on the third delivery, he trapped Tom Latham for a duck.
But the happiness was short-lived. With Glenn Philipps, Daryl Mitchell rebuilt with 75-run stand. However, India bowled tight lengths as the pressure kept building over New Zealand batters. First Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Phillips for 41 and soon Kuldeep Yadav removed Mark Chapman.
What handed the match to India was Mohammad Shami dismissing Daryl Mitchell for 134 for a five-wicket haul. He then ran through to get a 7-wicket haul as India bowled New Zealand out for 327 to enter Cricket World Cup final for a 4th time.
