The Maharastra Government on Saturday, November 27 issued an order in which only 25 per cent crowd is allowed for the Wankhede Test that begins from December 03. It has to be noted that the ongoing Test in Kanpur is underway with 100 per cent capacity allowed.

IND vs NZ 2nd Test: Wankhede Stadium to have only 25 per cent spectators for the 2nd Test

The department of Revenue and Forest, Disaster Management, Relief and Rehabilitation of the Maharashtra government issued an order on Saturday, November 27 which said: “In the case of open to sky spaces, for any events or gatherings, people upto 25% of space capacity will be allowed. Concerned DDMA shall have authority to decide the capacity in case of such locations of gatherings or events, if not declared formally (like stadiums).”

Wankhede stadium has a capacity of 33,000 but after Maharashtra Governments’ order, it is now expected that the MCA cannot allow more than 8,500 spectators.

As per the order, everyone at the premises be it the players, match officials or the spectators will have to be fully vaccinated. The spectators will also have to wear masks at all times and also practice social distancing.

However, as per reports, the MCA is planning to push the capacity to 50% and is hopeful the government will allow it as the Covid numbers have gone down in the city as well as the state.

The Test match will mark the return of international cricket at Wankhede Stadium after almost a year’s gap. The last ODI played at the venue was between India and Australia that dates back to 14 January 2020. Also, the Wankhede Stadium will host a Test match after a gap of years as the last Test held at the venue was against England in December 2016.

The second Test between India and New Zealand will be played between December 03-07.
