Hardik Pandya-led India faces a must-win situation to level the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in Lucknow. India were caught in a spin web on the Ranchi pitch and lost the opener by 21 runs on Friday. The loss also highlighted India’s bowling profligacy, especially by the pace duo of Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik. If tearaway pacer Malik conceded 16 runs in one over, Arshdeep leaked 27 runs in the last over, which put pressure on the India batters while chasing.
In batting, Indian top-order failed to get going. Despite some crucial contributions from Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav an Washinton Sundar, the Men in Blue lost the contest by a fair margin of 21 runs.
Meanwhile, the Indian contingent will be looking to even the odds in the upcoming match in Lucknow. The pitch in Lucknow is one of the most balanced surfaces in India. The average 1st innings score is 157, which drops down to 129 in the 2nd innings. The set batters can go big, but there is also help for slow bowlers.
Out of 8 matches played at this venue, five have been won by the team batting first. The numbers aren’t skewed much in that regard, so whoever wins the toss might not necessarily go on to win the match. But with dew around, the teams would want to bowl first.
