New Zealand were captained by Tim Southee in the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson and it is believed that the Kiwis will employ three different skippers for each of the T20Is. Tim Southee is likely to be rested for the game at Ranchim with Mitchell Santner and Trent Boult are reportedly among the candidates alongside Martin Guptill. New Zealand have only had a three-day gap since playing the T20 World Cup final against Australia, and with the test series coming up rest is a major part of their plans.
