IND vs IRE LIVE: Ex Selector says, ‘India vs Ireland & India tour of England SuryaKumar Yadav’s GOLDEN Chance to permanently seal NO. 4 spot’

Former India selector Devang Gandhi has backed Suryakumar Yadav to seal the No.4 spot in the Indian line in the upcoming series against Ireland and England. Yadav missed the latter stages of the IPL 2022 and the South Africa series due to injury but Shreyas Iyer’s miserly returns has opened the door for the Mumbai Indians star.

Shreyas Iyer finished with only 94 runs, averaging 23.50 at a strike rate of 123.68 in the five matches against South Africa batting at No.3. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain particularly struggled against short pitched bowling and spin, ringing alarm bells regarding his form and technique.

Speaking to the Telegraph, former selector Devang ga ndhi pointed out Shreyas’ flaws and how Suryakumar could combat those and stake his place in the team. He said, “Shreyas’ struggles against the short ball has been bugging him since long. But when one talks about Surya, what stands out is his versatility.”

He added, “Not just at No.4 or anywhere in the middle order, but Surya can fit in even as a No.3 and is also capable of performing a finisher’s role.”

Iyer’s short ball weakness is a major concern, especially with the T20 World Cup set to be played on pace-friendly wickets in Australia. Suryakumar meanwhile is yet to tour Australia, but Gandhi has backed him to improvise and acclimatise to the conditions.

He said, “His improvisation skills are quite good. We saw how well he negotiated a bowler of Jofra Archer’s calibre (during India’s home T20Is versus England last year) even when dealing with the short ball.”

Suryakumar Yadav made his debut last year and has been an integral part of the Indian set up, even featuring in India’s dismal T20 World Cup campaign last year. In 14 matches, the Mumbai Indians star has an average of 39 and a stunning strike-rate of 165.56.

India T20I squad: Hardik Pandya (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vc), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Venkatesh Iyer, Axar Patel, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Avesh Khan, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi
