IND vs ENG: Why did Ravindra Jadeja the batter fail at no. 5? Ex-England captain has answer

IND vs ENG: Ravindra Jadeja has been promoted up the batting order, in the absence of Virat Kohli & KL Rahul.

In the absence of some senior members in the team, Ravindra Jadeja failed to live up to the expectations with the bat, at no. 5 during the Ranchi Test against England. He only ended up scoring 12 and 4, when Team India needed him the most. It was then, that Dhruv Jurel rose to the occasion and bailed the team out of trouble.

Now, former England captain Alastair Cook has come forward and criticised Jadeja for his batting. He said that the all-rounder fails to find a balance between attack and defence, when batting ay No. 5.

“Jadeja in particular showed probably why he should be batting a little bit lower.” Cook told TNT Sports. “Yes he can score runs but the ability, under pressure, to find that balance between attack and defence under pressure – pressure does funny thing to you.

“Jadeja is a world-class all-rounder, but batting at five there he struggled in terms of taking no risks because he didn’t want to get out or trying to put a bit of pressure back on as a batter.”

Praise for Dhruv Jurel

Meanwhile, Cook was mighty impressed with the way Jurel performed. “But Jurel found that balance perfectly with his feet movement and sharpness of mind.” Jurel had scored a fighting 90 in the first innings, and the next he paired well with Shubman Gill, and scored 39 in a tricky chase.
