“It’s time to give Rahane a break. I am not sure of what the future holds for him. He is a quality player and I always believe that quality players come back into the team. But, the kind of form and confidence he has shown and the body language when he was out there in the middle… Not once during his eight-ball innings did Ajinkya Rahane look convincing,” Laxman told ESPNCricinfo.

IND vs ENG – Laxman on Ajinkya Rahane: Things seem to have been overshadowed for India’s vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane who is badly struggling to perform with the willow in the ongoing series against England. Rahane missed yet another chance of escalating his poor average of 15.57 after he was dismissed for a duck on a batting-friendly surface during India’s second innings against England at Oval. Barring his knock of 61 runs at Lord’s, the right-handed batsman has seen a string of failures with the bat in the current series against the Three Lions. Following Rahane’s offshore performance, questions have been knocking on management’s door to give a chance to Suryakumar Yadav in the final Test at Old Trafford.

Ajinkya Rahane’s horrifying stats with this dismal performance

  • Ajinkya Rahane’s batting average falls below 40 for the first time since late 2015 vs SA. This poor form has happened after 57 Tests now.
  • In the last 15 Test innings, Rahane has amassed just 285 runs from the bat. He has averaged just 19 and scored 30 plus on just three occasions.

This is how fans reacted after Rahane’s recent dismissal

Will India bring Suryakumar Yadav in place of Rahane in final Test at Old Trafford?

Meanwhile, Indian Team management has a big question to address ahead of the India-England final Test at Old Trafford. Though fans are vouching to give a debut chance to Suryakumar Yadav in Tests, the decision to drop the vice-captain would be worth observing. Suryakumar received a maiden call up for India in the red ball game and has been available for selection since the third Test at Headingley.

The 30-year old holds a phenomenal record in First-Class cricket. In 129 innings, he has smashed 5326 runs and returned with an average of 44.01. Besides, he has 14 hundreds and 26 fifties under his belt.

Clearly, by dint of numbers and his promising performance in India’s stint in the limited-overs series, the right-handed batsman can make his maiden appearance.
