India dominated Day 1 of the IND vs ENG 2nd Test at Vishakhapatnam, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal staying unbeaten on 179 runs. Most of the sessions belonged to the hosts as England were left frustrated at the end of the day’s play. The visitors only managed to get five wickets, with spinners not returning to haunt India after the Hyderabad horror. India are 336/6 at the end of day’s play.
IND vs ENG: Jaiswal stands tall on Day 1
Jaiswal was instrumental in India journey to amassing over 300 runs on Day 1. The southpaw had five 40+ runs partnerships with the other batters, while going on to become India’s leading run-getter in World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.
Skipper Rohit Sharma (14) had a very short stay at the crease, giving debutant spinner Shoaib Bashir his first Test wicket. Shubman Gill (34) failed to capitalise on a great start as he became James Anderson’s victim. A restless and unsettled Shreyas Iyer (27) was the next to depart, as Hyderabad hero Tom Hartley struck.
Debutant Rajat Patidar (32) enjoyed a good stay at the crease until he had to walk back due to an unlucky dismissal. All-rounder Axar Patel (27) flopped yet again as he sent a Bashir delivery straight to the hands of Rehan Ahmad. Ahmad struck yet again as KS Bharat (17) became England’s last victim on Day 1.
The first 40+ run partnership that Jaiswal featured in was with Rohit Sharma. Their partnership lasted till the 40-run mark before the skipper had to depart. The southpaw’s next partnership was with Gill, with both batters putting a 49-run stand. Iyer and Jaiswal almost put up a 100-run stand before the latter walked back to the pavilion, bringing an end to their 90-run partnership.
Debutant Rajat Patidar also played a crucial role as he anchored the innings along with Jaiswal. The two took their time at the centre, putting together a 70-run stand. Axar Patel was Jaiswal’s final 40+ run partnership, as the pair put up 51 runs.
Much to England’s dismay, their spinners failed to live up to the expectations after the 1st Test heroics. Bashir and Rehan managed to get two wickets each while Tom Hartley grabbed one scalp. Test veteran James Anderson added one wicket to his name.
