The writing was on the wall and now it could be curtains for Cheteshwar Pujara in Test cricket. Ahead of the IND vs ENG 1st Test, India Cricket Team skipper Rohit Sharma claimed that youngsters should get their opportunity. A spot opened when Virat Kohli opted out of the first 2 Tests citing personal reasons.
However, despite Pujara’s brilliant form he has been snubbed. The BCCI Selection Committee on the other hand picked Rajat Patidar was picked in the India squad for the first 2 Tests.
“Yeah, I mean, look, you could have thought that [going back to a senior player] we did actually think about it, but all these younger players, when are they going to get their opportunity? That’s something that we thought as well,” Rohit Sharma said in the Pre Match Press Conference.
Rohit Sharma has made it clear that though they did enquire about bringing back a senior player. The Indian skipper claimed that the youngsters are playing well and thus deserve their chance in the team.
“Leaving out an experienced player or not considering them is very hard because of the amount of runs they’ve scored, the kind of experience they’ve had, the amount of games that they have won. For us, it’s very hard to ignore all of that, but you sometimes got to bring certain players into your setup as well, and you got to give them your favorable conditions,” Rohit Sharma concluded.
