IND vs ENG Test: Ben Stokes’ change in field placement to force Shubman Gill’s wicket leaves Morgan impressed

Shubman looked to take advantage of a gap on off-side created by Stokes' change in field, and top-edged it as keeper Ben Foakes claimed an easy catch.

Indian batter Shubman Gill on Sunday became the first Indian batter in seven years to score a century for India batting at number 3 in Tests. Gill, however, departed soon after hitting the ton, top-edging one while trying to play a reverse sweep off the bowling of Shoaib Bashir. Former England captain Eion Morgan praised skipper Ben Stokes for the dismissal, claiming it was Stokes’ change in field placing that resulted in the wicket for the Three Lions.

Shubman Gill looked unstoppable on Sunday, hitting shots all over the park at will. He was under pressure to perform after having failed in previous innings. However, he scored quickly to bring up a much-needed century, but fell prey to a captaincy brilliance from Stokes soon after. When Bashir came to bowl, Stokes moved his fielder from the backward point position to the backward square leg. The change in field opened up a huge gap just behind the wicket.

New game, new week: England captain Ben Stokes approach IND vs ENG 2nd Test with renewed zeal as they lead series 1-0

Shubman looked to take advantage of the gap with a reverse-sweep two balls later, and top-edged it as keeper Ben Foakes claimed an easy catch.

However, the change in field by Stokes left Morgan mighty impressed.

“A wicket purely created by Ben Stokes. Numerous changes in the field. Stacked leg-side field enforces the change in shot, the change in mindset from Shubman Gill [who has] already played unbelievably well. Stokes knows it. England know it. He’s fallen for the trap.”
