IND vs ENG T20Is: Sanju Samson’s so-called ‘short-ball’ problem, not a worry at all

IND vs ENG: IN 40 T20Is till now, Sanju Samson has scored 844 runs, with three tons and two fifties, at an average of 26.

When the IND vs ENG T20I series got underway on Jan 22, all eyes were on opener Sanju Samson, who has been in superlative form. Last year, he went on to score three tons in the format, one against Bangladesh and two against South Africa. And since then there were a lot of expectations from him.

Sanju Samson vs Jofra Archer

But then, vs the English, he has only managed to return with scores of 26, 5, and 3. In the first match in Kolkata, he was dismissed by Archer, while trying to pull a short one. Then in Chennai too, he tried to go for a wild hoick against Archer, to be caught again. Likewise, Archer removed him in Rajkot too.

With these three dismissals, there are already noises, that Sanju Samson has a problem dealing with short ball. But then, that might not be true after all. If one looks at his record in 2024, his most successful year in T20Is, he played 12 matches and scored 436 runs — at an average of 43, and a strike rate of 180.

Sanju Decent Against Pacers

If we further break down these stats, just against pacers in these matches, in 2024 — in 11 outings, Sanju Samson enjoyed decent success. He scored 233 runs in 143 deliveries, at an average of 33, and a strike rate of 162. One must also not forget, in the SA series, where the Kerala batter scored two tons — faced the deadly fast bowlers like Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, who are known for their pace and bounce — that too on South African wickets.

His high dismissal rate against pacers, on short-pitch deliveries, could be attributed to the fact that he plays high-risk cricket, that involves a lot of shots.. even on deliveries which need to be dealt with patience. Overall, he has faced fast bowlers in T20Is — 19 times and has the best success rate against them.

Against pacers, Sanju averages 22, while against spinners, he averages 21. So to just assume that he would continue to struggle against pacers in the IND vs ENG series, would be far-fetched.
