IND vs ENG Live: Virat Kohli’s India suffer humiliation at Headingley, lose by an innings and 76 runs as England level series 1-1

IND vs ENG Live – England beat India: India’s fall began with Cheteshwar Pujara’s wicket. The veteran departed without adding any runs to his overnight score of 91. Virat Kohli soon followed after bringing up his half-century. Then it was just a matter of time as India collapsed swiftly. Only Ravindra Jadeja could offer some late resistance but it was not even close to a fightback as Ollie Robinson bagged a five-wicket haul to bowl India out for 278.

It was India’s 78 first innings debacle that remained the primary reason for the defeat. With nine batsmen returning on single-digits, they needed the bowlers to fire. But Joe Root led England with a century as England took huge 354 runs lead.

While India did well on Day 3 with Rohit Sharma bringing up a half-century and so did Pujara but Virat Kohli & Co could not survive England’s assault with the second new ball as India lost the momentum and the match.

Interestingly, the last time India lost by an innings was also against England back in 2018 when they played at Lord’s. But this time, it happened at Headingley.

IND vs ENG Live – England beat India: Virat Kohli defends Rishabh Pant and India’s lower order.

“It’s down to scoreboard pressure. We knew we were up against it when we were out for 80 and the opposition put up a big score. We put up crucial partnerships and saw the day through, but the pressure from the English bowlers was brilliant this morning and we didn’t respond well,” Virat Kohli said.

“Batting collapses can happen in this country, the pitch was good to bat on, but their discipline with the ball forced us to make a few mistakes, and it was difficult to deal with spells where we weren’t getting runs. We didn’t make good decisions as a batting side. The pitch looked good to bat on, and when England batted it hadn’t changed much, so they had a lot more intent with the bat, made better decisions. They were the deserving side to win, to be honest,” he added.

“You could say that we don’t have enough batting depth, but the top order has to give enough runs to the lower middle order to step up. The lower order can’t bail the team out all the time. We don’t have much other than the batting in the second innings to take from this game in terms of positives. Playing another spinner would depend on the pitch and we’ll take a call later. It depends on the moisture and how it will hold up for five days. The pressure from the fourth seamer is important sometimes and sometimes we have to make sure taking only three seamers means that the spinners have to come in quickly,” Kohli said.

England skipper Joe Root lauds James Anderson for setting up the platform for the win.

“It was a fantastic and clinical performance from the bowlers. The two big lads put loads of pressure with three maidens, and we had a really good opportunity to take wickets and we took them ruthlessly. We know we are capable of performances like this, and we have the talent, that opening stand was fantastic too. We controlled and hung in with the new ball, and we reaped the rewards. Anderson churns out performances like that and that’s why he’s the GOAT of Test cricket. He’s very fit and sets an example for the other bowlers,” Root said.

@16:49: WICKET! Shami doesn’t survive this time. He takes an inside edge off a Moeen Ali delivery and departs.

@16:21: WICKET! The big man departs. Virat Kohli didn’t make any mistakes until now but he does so nicking one to Joe Root at first slip and departs. The century drought continues.

@16:18: FIFTY! Virat Kohli brings up his half-century. Now, the target is to end his century drought. He does so in style, smashing a boundary.

@16:05: Virat Kohli survives. Kohli had almost poked in an Anderson delivery and umpire had raised his finger. Kohli takes DRS and survives.

@15:58: Rahane smashes a cover drive off Robinson for a 4. He is looking good but can he continue?

@15:51: Rahane comes in to join Virat Kohli. The two will have to bat longer.

@15:45: DRS! WICKET! Pujara departs. He left the ball too late and it struck his pads. He has to go as the ball tracker finds it hitting the off stump.

@15:36: Pujara faces Robinson in the 2nd over and does well to leave the odd swinging deliveries.

@15:31: It’s Virat Kohli vs James Anderson with the second new ball.

@15:27: Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara resume on Day 4. Both are approaching personal milestones.

@15:15: Craig Overton has already challenged Indian batters with the new ball. But the pitch is flat and with the sun shining, seamers will have a hard time getting the swings.
