India Innings Summary:

For the first time in Cricket World Cup 2023, India had to bat first under the sun. And with two-paced wicket not playing along, India were off to a horrible start.

Chris Woakes who had so far been rather poor bowled the best spell so far. His first victim was Shubman Gill whose woodwork was rattled in the 4th over. David Willey took things in his own hands as Virat Kohli departed for a 9-ball duck, falling prey to a set-up.

Shreyas Iyer once again failed to live up to the expectations as a Chris Woakes delivery ended his stay. Rohit Sharma had to restrict his strokeplay as India went down to 40/3.

But KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma together rebuilt, adding 91 runs. Just when KL Rahul seemed set for a big score, David Willey returned to dismiss him for 39. But Rohit Sharma carried on with Suryakumar Yadav, adding another 33 runs, completing 18,000 runs in international cricket.

However, he missed out on a well-deserved century as he departed for 87. But SKY filling in for injured Hardik Pandya scored a brilliant 49 under pressure. In the end, Jasprit Bumrah scored 16 and Kuldeep Yadav scored 9 to take India to 229/9.

David Willey picked up three wickets for 45 runs while Adil Rashid (2/35) and Chris Woakes (2/33) managed two wickets each. Mark Wood also got a wicket.

England Innings Summary

Chasing 230 in Lucknow with dew coming in seemed a straightforward affair for the defending champions. But Indian pace attack blew the English away.

Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were off to a steady start. But Jasprit Bumrah struck in fifth over with twin strikes to rattle England. First, he cleaned up Malan. And then, Joe Root departed for a golden duck as he was trapped LBW.

That opened the floodgates. Mohammad Shami, in a fiery spell, cleaned up Ben Stokes for a 10-ball duck to reduce England to 33/3. But it wasn’t the end. Shami struck again in his next over to clean up Jonny Bairstow as England further slumped to 39/4.

With powerplay over, Rohit Sharma introduced Kuldeep Yadav. And he delivered the wicket of out-of-sorts Jos Buttler with a terrific delivery that turned 7.2 degrees to stun England captain.

The wickets kept tumbling as Moeen Ali departed next for 15 with Mohammad Shami striking again. Chris Woakes made it 98/7 with Ravindra Jadeja also joining the party. Bumrah and Shami completed the formalities in 35 overs as England were bowled out for 129.

With the win, India cemented their position at the top with 12 points from six games. England also cemented their position, albeit at the bottom with just a win from 6 games.
