IND vs ENG LIVE: India tour of England: After all the drama, Jasprit Bumrah was announced as India’s new captain on Monday ahead of the all-important fifth Test at Edgbaston. But the first call he made was to his first skipper MS Dhoni for guidance. While captaincy inexperience would be a major point of discussion, the Chennai Super Kings captain cited his own example to inspire him. “I have even spoken to MS Dhoni, he told me that he captained India straight away, he had never captained anywhere else, he is one of the most successful captains. I am just focusing on how to help the team & not on what I have done before,” said Jasprit Bumrah.

The pacer from Gujarat made his debut under the likes of Dhoni, Kohli and Bumrah and learned a lot about the game from them. But Bumrah realises the importance of creating his own mark as a captain too.

The pacer from Gujarat has played under the likes of Dhoni, Kohli and Bumrah and learned a lot about the game from them. But Bumrah realises the importance of creating his own mark as a captain too.

“Obviously, these are the legends of the game (MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma). They have contributed a lot to Indian cricket and they are doing till now. I always try to listen to everyone’s advice, I try to learn from them but eventually, what your instincts tell you, and in the end, your own way cannot be the same as everyone else,” Jasprit Bumrah said at his first press conference as temporary India captain.

I always try to keep learning but in the end, what your instincts tell you and what you think is the right call, I try to do that. I have played under many seniors, and always look to learn,” said Bumrah in a press conference.

It is for the first time Bumrah will be leading Team India in any format. He also becomes the first pacer to captain India in the longer format after Kapil Dev in 1987. Bumrah understands what it means to wear the India captain’s cap.

However, despite his inexperience, he has his ideas on how to lead India. He will draw inspiration from his previous captains but on the field at Edgbaston, the decisions and ideas will be his own.

“It is a big achievement, big honour. It was my dream to play Test cricket. It is a big achievement that I have gotten the honour to lead the country, it is the biggest achievement of my career. I am very happy,” Bumrah said.

However, not having permanent Test captain Rohit Sharma is a big miss. The opener was ruled out of the clash with player getting tested positive for the second time. It is not only the swashbuckling batter which will be missed, but the experience of having Rohit at the middle is a different thing altogether as well. “Rohit Sharma is a very important member of the Indian team, we’ll surely miss him”.
