IND vs ENG LIVE – T20 WC Semifinals LIVE – India Playing XI vs England: From Mr Finisher to Mr Finished, DK 2.0 has flopped when the team has needed him the most. Dinesh Karthik with his poor returns in Australia and similar struggles of Rishabh Pant have put both Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid in a spot of bother. But when India take on Jos Buttler-led England in the 2nd semifinal, the trust will be on youngster Pant rather than on Karthik. Despite equal struggles and a flop show against Zimbabwe, Pant is set to get the nod in the semifinal, closing Karthik’s chapter in Team India. Dinesh Karthik since his return to Team India following a brilliant IPL 2022 gave India an option at the death. But his initial success soon faded away. Barring a 27-ball 46 against South Africa on a batting-friendly Indore pitch, Karthik hasn’t succeeded much of late. In T20 WC, he has returns of 1, 6 and 7 in 4 matches.

“It’s disappointing for sure. But one should understand how many balls he gets and what surfaces he has batted on. It’s not fair to criticise a batter who come at 17-18th over on a difficult surface and get running from the first ball. It’s up to the team management on who should play in the semis. We have picked the best 15 available. Now, it’s their call,” one of the selectors told InsideSport.

IND vs ENG LIVE: Rishabh Pant over Dinesh Karthik in T20 WC Semifinals

  • However, patience has run out for both Rohit and Dravid.
  • As things stand, Rishabh Pant is the first choice barring any late injuries or niggles.
  • Rishabh Pant hasn’t fared better than Dinesh Karthik either in the same span.
  • Karthik made his return on June 9 against South Africa.
  • In the same span, Pant has played 16 games, scoring 281 runs to Karthik’s 287 in 22 matches.
  • Karthik has managed a strike rate of 141.37. But that is on the lower side considering he mostly plays in the death overs.
  • Rishabh Pant who plays at No 5 or 6 has a strike rate of 130.09. Considering has had to rebuild, it’s justifiable.
  • But what bothers Team India is his lean patch in T20s. In last 12 months, Rishabh Pant has managed just 1 half-century.
  • However, his strike rate isn’t that bad. As Virat Kohli has regained his form has played longer innings, Team India can take the chance of a sluggish Rishabh Pant at No 5 to play the anchor role.
  • If Kohli or Hardik or Suryakumar Yadav are on crease at death, they can be lethal.
  • Kohli has a strike rate of 199.03 at death while SKY has 237.83. Hardik has 155.55.
  • With Adelaide Oval also happy hunting ground for Kohli, India would hope to get another magical knock from the King.
  • Hence, Dinesh Karthik would need to sit out.
Since Karthik’s return Dinesh Karthik Rishabh Pant
Innings 22 16
Runs 287 281
HS 55 44
Average 20.5 21.61
50s 1 0
30+ Scores 3 2
Strike Rate 141.37 130.09

One for the future: Rishabh Pant despite Dinesh Karthik’s sudden return is still the No 1 keeper in India. The selectors are ready to move past Karthik following T20 WC. The semifinal stage is the best place to judge a player. Hence, time is up for Karthik. Even though Pant has scored a mere 3 off 7 against Zimbabwe, it will be his place. Rahul Dravid although left it vague, he gave a hint of the the future.

“Sometimes it gives us the opportunity, as well, to play Rishabh, keeping obviously this game in mind as well but also the future. I think everyone is available for selection. Just because somebody missed out on this game doesn’t mean that we can’t go back to him. We might go a different way, as well,” said Dravid on the potential changes in the playing XI.
