Arshdeep Singh DEBUT: Having sat on the bench for seven straight games, Arshdeep Singh made it count after receiving his debut cap on Thursday. The left-arm pacer finished with figures of 2/18 in his 3.3 overs, in a largely successful debut in Southampton.
The Punjab pacer showed great control over his line and length, partnering veteran Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the powerplay. He then later joined Harshal Patel at the death showcasing his versatility and his ability to nail the yorkers. The 23-year-old bowled 13 dot balls out of 21 deliveries on Thursday, staking his claim for a place in the side.
With India still to settle on a 3rd choice pacer in T20s, Arshdeep Singh’s emergence and performances could see him pip the rest of the competition particularly Umran Malik and Avesh Khan. Singh is not only comfortable bowling at the death but his left-arm angle brings another dimension to the bowling side.
Malik was preferred over Arshdeep in Ireland, with the Kashmiri quick featuring in both games. Singh featured in both the warm-up games and made his mark, earning his debut cap with Rohit Sharma’s return to captaincy.
Arshdeep is likely to retain his place in the team following his stellar debut, meaning Avesh Khan and Umran Malik might have to wait on the bench for an opportunity to arise.
