Shubman Gill might be the most talented batter of this generation, but then, he isn’t doing his reputation a world of good, with a poor string of scores that he managed to get in the recent IND vs AUS series, that India lost 1-3. A lot was expected out of him, but he only managed to score 93 runs in 3 Tests, at an average of 18.
Shubman Gill Needed in IND vs ENG T20Is
That is in stark contrast to what he managed in 2024 in Tests. He remained excellent throughout and in 12 matches scored 866 runs at an average of 43, with three tons. Every time he got a start, he found ways to get out, in the series Down Under. And those failures might just have a few repercussions.
Not going into the detail, if he could be axed, what one needs to realise is, given the talent the potential he has, he should actually be given a chance in the IND vs ENG T20Is, to bounce back in form for the subsequent ODIs, and then the Champions Trophy. Mind you, he will be one of the most crucial batters for the team in those tournaments.
Gill vs Abhishek Sharma
Player | Matches | Runs | Average | Strike-rate |
Shubman Gill | 21 | 578 | 30.42 | 139.27 |
Abhishek Sharma | 12 | 256 | 23.27 | 171.81 |
Yes, there is a certain Abhishek Sharma there for the IND vs ENG T20Is, who has shone in patches, along with Yashavi Jaiswal as well, but then the selectors need to get Gill back into confidence. After struggling with the red ball in Australia, he might not be in the best frame of minds, and that needs to change before CT 2025. And a few runs under his belt, might just change the scenario for him.

In fact, Shubman Gill has better numbers than Abhishek Sharma in the shortest format. Abhishek in 12 matches has scored 256 runs, at an average of 23, and has only one fifty and a century to his name. On the other hand, Gill has 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30. Look, there is no doubt that Gill has become a giant in ODIs, but again, needs to rediscover his mojo. In 47 matches, he has scored 2328 runs at an average of 58 with 6 hundreds and 13 fifties.
