England speedster Mark Wood on Friday said he was not aware of the 5 penalty runs that England were awarded on the 2nd day of the IND vs ENG 3rd Test. England started their innings with 5 runs on the board after Ravichandran Ashwin ran on the protected area of the pitch while batting during the first session of day two.
England were pegged on the backfoot by India’s fiery batting. The Indian team finished their innings 445 courtesy of twin centuries from Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. Debutants Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel also impressed with the bat, scoring 62 and 46 respectively.
England were equally attacking when they came out to bat. Ben Duckett was particularly impressive, scoring a century in just 88 balls. The southpaw remained not out at 133 at the end of day’s play, as England were 207/2.
England bowler Mark Wood, who took 4 wickets in the first innings, said he was not aware of the 5-run penalty rule. He also said the game’s pace felt like it wasn’t going anywhere.
“I wasn’t aware about the five penalty runs. Was fielding in the deep. Bairstow was very adamant we look after the wicket,” Wood said at the end of day’s play.
“The Indian innings felt long. The game probably stayed where it was. It was a bizarre day where we felt game wasn’t going anywhere at some stage,” he added.
