Finally, after 12 failures in Tests, India batter Shubman Gill came good and slammed a ton against England in Vizag, on Sunday. It was largely due to this effort, that the hosts could set a challenging target of 399, to an English team that is well capable of getting the runs.
But one more failure on Gill’s part would have certainly brought the spotlight on veteran No. 3 batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been scoring big runs in the Ranji Trophy, for Saurashtra. Even former India coach Ravi Shastri pointed this out during commentary on day three of the match.
Shastri said, “It’s a fresh side, a young side. These youngsters have to prove themselves. Don’t forget, Pujara is waiting. He is grinding it out at the Ranji Trophy and is always on the radar.”
Yuvraj Singh Responds
But soon after Gill proved his critics wrong, former India batsman Yuvraj Singh took a subtle dig at them. He tweeted, “Rising to the occasion once again and playing a well-balanced knock! Good to see the three-digit mark. Well played my boy – let the bat do the talking.”
