IND vs AUS: Ashwin gets into the act straight away, Marnus Labuschagne survives the mini battle
It is no secret that Nagpur pitch will assist spinners from day one. Before the Test, Australia had prepared for the Ashwin test by facing his impersonator Mahesh Pithiya in the nets. Ashwin got straight into the act by getting vicious turn and bounce. While Labuschagne survived the mini battle, deep down he knows Ashwin will challenge him by playing mind games.
In an interview with Cricbuzz, Labuschagne admitted that Ashwin will pose a huge threat during Border Gavaskar Trophy owing to the relentless pressure he creates from one end. The right-hand batter feels it is more about combating the mental thing with Ashwin.
“A hundred percent. I think that’s what I like about Ashwin. I think his thoughts about the game, his thinking, the way he manufactures overs, the way he tries to get you out in a certain area. But also the way he might not go to that area early. So, he might be attacking you on the inside edge for a while, and then he’ll bowl that one which he undercuts and slides away and get you caught first slip.
He’ll keep mixing it up, whereas most other bowlers will just try and bowl their best ball. And if you put them under pressure and combat that best ball, they might go around the wicket. And that’s their only other option, try and shut you down, and shut the scoreboard down and work you over. Get you back there.”
For the record, Ashwin has got the better of Labuschagne two times in six innings. This is the first time, Labuschagne has traveled to India to play a Test series. Apart from Smith, the South African-born batter is expected to play a key role in the four-match series.
