Washington Sundar and Australia have some sort of deep connection, as he has now scored his 4th half-century in Test cricket, and second against Australia during the IND vs AUS 4th Test in Melbourne. He had previously scored 62 runs against the same team in Brisbane on 15th January 2021, when he made his Test debut for India.
Washington formed partnership with Nitish Reddy
Washington Sundar came in after Ravindra Jadeja’s dismissal. The batter steadily added runs and, along with Nitish Kumar Reddy, formed a partnership of more than one hundred runs. He continuously supported Reddy from the other end, while Nitish Kumar Reddy completed his half-century before Washington.
Smith gives Sundar a lifeline
Steve Smith dropped Washington Sundar’s catch when he was batting on 18 runs. This happened during the 81st over when Mitchell Starc had the second new ball. Starc bowled a full delivery down the leg side, and Sundar tried to flick it towards fine leg. However, the ball hit the back of his bat and moved towards the slips. Smith was taken by surprise as the ball came to him unexpectedly, and his diving attempt to catch it was unsuccessful. Even Starc was surprised by how the ball reached Smith, as Sundar got lucky with a reverse edge.
Sundar makes his comeback after 3 years
Washington made his comeback to the Indian squad after a long time, playing his first series in three years in October 2024 against New Zealand. After playing two Test matches against New Zealand, he was included in the squad for the Australia vs India Test series. Although he played in the first match, he was dropped for the next two in Brisbane and Adelaide. After some adjustments, Washington was recalled to the squad in place of Harshit Rana.
