IND vs AUS: Time is running out for David Warner very quickly. After two more Asian failures in the opening Test in Nagpur, the clamour to replace David Warner is getting louder and louder in the Australian selectors’ ears. In the latest, Warner’s former teammate Mitchell Johnson called out the selectors and asked them to drop the veteran opener. Notably, Australia’s selectors have already contemplated replacing Travis Head, who was shockingly fired last week, with David Warner as the Test opener in India. “I would drop David Warner, elevate Matthew Renshaw to open and bring Travis Head into the middle order,” Johnson wrote in his column in West Australian.

The 36-year-old opener has been averaging 17.8 in 22 innings over the last two years.

After India took a 1-0 series lead in Nagpur, Warner’s old teammate Mitchell Johnson wrote an editorial in the West Australian arguing that Warner should be benched for the second Test following scores of 1 and 10 in Nagpur.

Johnson further questioned the consistency of the selection panel’s approach to Travis Head despite the fact that young opener only averages 21.30 in Asia. Head has just returned from a tour of Sri Lanka where he scored 23 runs at an average of 7.66, and is a left-hander, which on this tour has seen players pushed aside in favour of right-handers.

“If it’s about a horses for courses policy based on previous form in the subcontinent, why didn’t that apply to Warner?”, Johnson wrote.

“That’s where it got murky for me,” he added.

Famously, Warner has not fared as well in the subcontinent compared to his success at home.

In India, he averages 22.16, as opposed to 58.39 at home.

Despite the dreadful magnitude of the loss in Nagpur, it is still doubtful that Australia will drop its star opener. Notably, Warner hasn’t been dropped from the national team since making his debut in 2009, with the exception of a one-year suspension in 2018–19.
