With rank turners expected at every venue, the Indian batters are going through rigorous training sessions in the build-up to the Border Gavaskar Trophy trophy. The BCCI arranged a special 5 day camp in Nagpur before the first Test as Rohit Sharma and Co came to terms with a return to red ball cricket. The Men in Blue are practicing on surfaces aiding spin as they prepare for a challenge from Nathan Lyon and Co.

India boasts of perhaps the strongest spin contingent in the world and BCCI have flexed its muscles to allow the best preparation. Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja are part of the squad and expected to play a huge part in the India vs Australia series. Additionally, BCCI has sent Washington Sundar, Saurabh Kumar, Rahul Chahar and R Sai Kishore as net bowlers.

IND vs AUS Test Series: Why India have 8 spinners in the side?

  • India name Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav in their initial squad.
  • The BCCI then added Washington Sundar, Saurabh Kumar, Rahul Chahar and SAi Kishore as net bowlers.
  • With 8 different types of spinners, Rohit and Co have the chance to adjust to various release points and bowling styles.
  • Furthermore, India’s main spinners get enough rest and remain fresh as the tour progresses.
  • In Sai Kishore and Saurabh Kumar, India have two left-arm spinners in the mould of Jadeja and Axar Patel
  • Sundar bowls off-spin like Ashwin and has filled in for him and Jadeja in the past.
  • Rahul Chahar is a wrist spinner, much like Kuldeep Yadav.

With this being a long series, the idea is to manage the workload of the spinners better in training. Sundar bowls off-spin like Ashwin and famously filled in for him in the Gabba Test Down Under. In Sai Kishore and Saurabh Kumar, India have two left-arm spinners in the mould of Jadeja and Axar Patel. Rahul Chahar is a wrist spinner much like Kuldeep Yadav.

The Men in Blue have already begun training. Rohit Sharma and Co had a long net session at the old VCA Ground in Nagpur. The likes of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja all faced throwdowns ahead of what is a crucial series.  There are two more sessions at the old VCA Ground in Nagpur. India will then move to the Stadium in Jamtha, where the series opener will be played.

The four-match Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is also part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23. Jasprit Bumrah missing the series is a big blow for India as India must win the series 2-0 or 3-1 to qualify for the WTC Final in June. The first Test of the series begins on February 9 in Nagpur. The last two Tests are scheduled to be held across the first two weeks of March.

India squad Australia Series: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), R.
