At just 22 years of age, Murphy could make a debut in the high-intensity Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to begin on February 9 in Nagpur. Ahead of the first Test match, former Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe has hyped up the off-spinner and has pegged him to be a superstar in the near future.
“Todd Murphy is going to be a superstar. I said that about Steve Smith in 2010. You just knew something was special there. The reason I say that (about Todd Murphy) is that he has got the ability to get the ball overspinning, it’s exactly what Nathan Lyon does. But he has also got a lot of tricks in his armoury. Square spin, which is important in over there in India, which is side spin that goes quicker through the air, and if it bites, it spins sharply,” said O’Keefe.

O’Keefe claimed that the off-spinner possessed a wealth of experience and that Murphy exuded confidence while also possessing excellent skills. He said, “When you speak to Todd Murphy, you don’t feel that he is 22. He knows as much about cricket as I do at 38. He has got a great armoury of skills, a lot of confidence and his best ball is good enough to challenge any batter in the world.”
The ex-Australian spinner claimed that Australia might decide to team up Lyon and Murphy at some stage during the series. “I would not be surprised if Australia at some stage in the series play 2 off spinners. I think they will still play Ashton Agar, but don’t be surprised if you see Todd Murphy partner Nathan Lyon at some stage of the series,” O’Keefe concluded.
However, before the start of the Test series, Australia’s pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were ruled out of the first Test. Now Australia will be depending more on their spin department. So, Todd Murphy can play a crucial role in this series.
